Pastoral Care
The aim of the Pastoral Care Programme is to promote the ethos of the Order of St. John of God through the philosophy of welcoming, hospitality, inclusion and caring for clients and their families and for staff members within the Lucena Services.
The Pastoral Care Programme aims to support and enhance the spiritual welfare of all in the following ways;
Communication, Networking and Supports:
- Provide a welcoming environment for all using the Lucena Services
- Build supportive relationships with clients and their families as appropriate
- Explore the spiritual dimension of healing and recovery
- Offer support and comfort in times of sickness, stress, loss and bereavement
- Promote awareness of the role of Pastoral Care through personal presence of the Pastoral Care Worker, the provision of information leaflets and the involvement of the Pastoral Care Worker in the staff induction programme.
Resources:
- Promote the use of the oratory as a sacred space and encourage its use as a place of reflection, calm and peace.
- Provide a library of spiritual and reflective literature appropriate to all who use the Lucena Services
- Provide opportunities for reflection through music, art and literature.
Religious Ministry:
- Celebrate the liturgical seasons of the year of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter and acknowledge main religious feasts from other cultures and traditions.
- Support Religious Education in St. Peter’s School.
- Attend term Masses in the school and assist with preparation.
- Support school staff in the preparation of children for the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation.
- Provide support for school staff, pupils and their families in times of sickness, loss or bereavement through school based programmes such as Seasons for Growth.
Training and Research:
- Engage in research in relation to best practice in the delivery of Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Services in a multi-cultural and dominational environment.
- Elicit the views of clients and staff on how Pastoral Care can be relevant and inclusive of all faiths and beliefs.
- Liaise with Healthcare Chaplains throughout the St. John of God Services.
- Network with other external Pastoral Care Services.
- Establish strong networks with other departments ie Human Resources, Education and Training and Library services.
